Shameful racism

The Zaragoza-Barcelona soccer match just ended and it was ugly. The Zaragoza crowd was taunting Barcelona forward Samuel Eto'o with ooh-ooh-ooh monkey noises whenever he touched the ball and he finally said, literally, "No mas," and began to walk off the field. His teammates calmed him down and the game went on. The referee should have called it off right there and forfeited the game. He didn't, and about two minutes later Edmilson hammered a shot to the top right corner of the Zaragoza goal and goalie Cesar was beaten and midfielder Celades deflected it with his hand on the goal line. Red card and penalty kick, and Ronaldinho drilled it for 0-1. The Barça players did not celebrate the goal. Two minutes later Eto'o centered from the right and Larsson knocked it in for 0-2, and they did not celebrate it either. At the end of the match Eto'o made the V sign with both hands at the crowd, which we all know stands for victory, and something else in Great Britain in addition.

In the wake of this disaster, this article on soccer bigotry in Europe by Duncan Currie from the Weekly Standard is an absolute must-read. Iberian Notes commented on most of this when it first happened, and so we are not surprised at all. Disgusted, but not surprised.
